Some Nut Is Gonna Lose an Eye

Why in the hell do peanut vendors feel the need to throw a bag of nuts thirty rows? They have to walk up there to get the money anyway, why risk injury or embarrassment?

The next time someone near me orders peanuts, I am going to jump in front of the flying peanuts in hopes of either getting a) some free peanuts or b) some other free thing that is cool.

Quick story that is slightly related. I have always been a very educated sports fan and when I was a kid I was at a Bruins game late in the season. There was a couple behind me, and the guy said "I'd love to get hit by a puck, you'd get all free playoff tickets."

Anyone who has ever been to a hockey game knows that they constantly remind you to watch out for pucks leaving the playing surface. Yet, this guy thought he was going to be getting playoff tickets throughout. Even as a kid I knew how stupid that comment was. I hoped he got hit by a puck just so I could say "Gee I bet those playoff tickets are already in the mail, moron."

In The Garage, I Feel Safe

While many Red Sox players are complaining about the negative media and the fact that people are bemoaning their poor play as of late, what they fail to recognize is that THE NEGATIVITY IS WARRANTED!

The last two losses haven't just been bad, they have been miserable. I said it before, I will say it again, I don't trust Kim. I wouldn't trust him with a ten run lead in a game that matters, let alone a one run lead in a game that matters.

This is just miserable. I can't watch SportsCenter out of fear of seeing the same highlights again. I wouldn't care if the season ended today because then I wouldn't have to go through this anymore.

In spite of all this, though, I still believe this team CAN make it to the postseason. But I think it is safe to say we won't be catching the Yankees, short of taking 5 or 6 of the next seven game from them. And even then we'd need to throw together a nice 9 or 10 game streak.

This is all so deja vu like isn't it?

You Gotta Believe, I guess

Hopefully by the time I get back from my mini-vacation, the Sox will we up 2 in the Wild Card and 2 back in the AL East.

I can't take a pennant race. It's not good for my health.

Nothing Doing

I started this Blog to force myself to write more, and particularly on sports.

Well, so far I give myself a D+ on this little endeavour.

Here are the reasons:

----Lack of writing, especially lately.

----Lack of improvement. I honestly have no idea whether or not I've gotten better.

----Lack of readers. Did I really have 867 in one day once?

Nothing gets me going like sports. There are other things I care about, but I can't speak as intelligently about most of them. Sports isn't just IN my DNA, it IS my DNA. But lately, I just can't get excited. Part of it may have to do with the Red Sox, who I swore I would stay optimistic about. But I can't ignore this sinking feeling that they still don't have the pitching (It really is too bad Derek Lowe died from cancer this offseason. What? You say he survived and has been pitching for the Sox?). But there's not much going on in sports besides baseball, and considering baseball is bringing me such typical agony, I don't want to think about it, let alone write about it.

But if you do care, hang through this with me. Hopefully, one of these days, I'll actually write something worth reading.

Slow News Month

Sorry for the lack of updates (that is, if anyone actually cares about the lack of updates.) But August is one of the two slowest months in sports and nothing has really grabbed my attention enough to write about it.

However, I have realized one thing with the Kobe Bryant situation. Because our system is "innocent until proven guilty," we must believe that Kobe Bryant did nothing wrong. So if we have to think he didn't do it, what does that mean for the accuser? Do we have to believe she is a liar? If Kobe didn't do it, then she is making it up?

That makes her a whore/golddigger/liar/manipulator/jerk/whatever. If we have to think one way, then the reverse must be true. It can't be that Kobe is both innocent and she isn't lying.

Makes you feel kind of bad for victims in general, but especially for sexual assault victims. You almost get the feeling that if he really did assault her, and she really was a victim, that by having him charged with it she'll never really win. She'll always have been "asking for it" to a lot of people.

And at the end, no one will win. We all know Kobe won't go to jail (he didn't even kill anyone, and O.J. has set that precedent.) We all know she'll be mocked forever. We all know Kobe's image is ruined. What a waste. And all because Kobe couldn't keep his pants on.

Not Funny

Seriously, this isn't funny. If someone would like to tell the Red Sox that this little mini-disaster losing streak isn't getting the big laughs they hoped for, I would appreciate it.

It Figures My Blog Would Crap Out During the Trade Deadline

If anyone cares enough to have been upset by my lack of updates, I apologize. The last three times I tried to write in this, my blog was down. Anyway, lots to get too.

----The Sox traded for Jeff Suppan today. Yet ANOTHER GOOD move by das wunderkid, Theo Epstein. I am not used to this "good management by the Sox thing," so excuse me if I seem a little flabbergasted. I bet Oakland wishes they had a GM like Theo Epstein. Suppan is not a HUGE move, but he is a good move. He is a legitimate number three starter, and the kind of pitcher you need and want pitching game three at Yankee Stadium in the playoffs. And because the Sox basically undid the Brandon Lyon deal, they got him back, and the final deal reads as "Freddy Sanchez for Scott Sauerbeck and Jeff Suppan."

I feel like we stole from Pittsburgh. But that isn't even as bad as the fleecing we gave Cincinnati. Man this feels good. Just say it with me now: You. Gotta. Believe.

----The Yankees traded for Aaron Boone. Now, it is pretty clear that Brian Cashman doesn't play fantasy baseball, because if he did he would see that Boone's numbers aren't nearly as good as they seem because since May he hasn't been that good. He exploded in April and appeared poised for a 30-30 season, but just hasn't been the case. Maybe he will thrive in the Yankee lineup, and he is an upgrade over their Ventura/Zeile platoon. But, they gave up their top pitching prospect. Was that REALLY their most pressing need? All I know is if the Sox made that deal in similar circumstances, they'd be blasted. Of course, Red Sox fans are smarter, so maybe Sally from the Bronx won't notice.

----Anyone who knows me should be surprised by my lack of mentioning that the Bruins will (finally and rightfully) retire Cam Neely's number 8 on January 12th. I am planning a longer write up on Cam soon enough. He was my favorite player to watch, ever. I would go to Bruins games and watch only him when he was on the ice. The end of his career killed me. If I ever see someone playing the game of hockey that reminds me of Cam Neely, I will be a very happy man. However, it won't happen. Oh, and now it's time to get him into the Hall of Fame.

----The best news on the trade deadline for the Sox? That the Mariners didn't make a move. They do this every year, and last year it cost them a spot in the playoffs. The Angels are done, so three playoff spots are going to be split between four teams, and one of them didn't improve. If you were betting on which team will be on the outside looking in, wouldn't you lay your money down on the literally same ole Mariners? Me too.

----Mario Lemieux is coming back for another season. He may only play 50 games, he may only finish 40 of them, but man, is it worth it. I have had the (mis)fortune of seeing Mario, in person, destroy the Bruins. He literally looks like he's playing a different game. And, if Mario had played the majority of his career in the 80's and was healthy, then the debate might be between him and Orr for who was the greatest player and not Gretzky. While Mario did play with a few great offensive teams, none of them could touch Gretzky's Oilers.

It's sad to think about how hockey might be growing today if they were offering the same product from 15 years ago, instead of this trap crap. Thanks New Jersey.
